Health is a state of body - Wellness is a state of being

About NMAA

The Natural Medicine Alliance Australia (NMAA) aims at uniting natural medicine in Australia. NMAA is is not a practitioner association.

It’s a grassroots initiative by practitioners, after nationwide consultation and feedback from the natural healthcare community.

Together, by fostering partnerships between associations, practitioners, consumers of natural medicine, government and other stakeholders, we can create a vibrant and sustainable natural healthcare sector.

NMAA’s vision is:

‘That Australians have access to the best possible natural medicines sector’.

NMAA strives to strengthen the natural medicines sector by representing the interests of consumers and practitioners in the delivery of natural healthcare.

This includes:

  • Natural medicine systems - such as Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy and Ayurveda

  • Biologically-based and ingestive therapies - such as Herbal medicine and Nutrition

  • Physical therapies - such as Remedial Massage, Myotherapy, Alexander Technique, Bowen Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Feldenkrais, Pilates

  • Energetic therapies - such as Acupuncture, Reiki, Flower Essences, Chakra Healing and Crystal Healing

  • Mind-body techniques - such as Meditation, Relaxation techniques, Brain Gym, Colour Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, Hypnotherapy, Music Therapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming

  • Lifestyle practices.

NMAA’s vision is founded on four pillars:

1 - A strong and united natural health sector

The sector needs to unite so that it can become more influential and to safeguard the right of Australians to access, learn and practice natural medicine.

NMAA seeks to unite different natural modalities, practitioners and groups with one representative body.

2 - Protection of tradition and choice

Natural medicine is well established and has long and continuous historical use for thousands of years. NMAA seeks to preserve people’s right to choose natural medicine as part of their healthcare mix.

3 - Co-regulation

Natural medicine is considered low risk. Any regulation of the natural medicines sector needs to be appropriate and in proportion to this. NMAA endorses a model of regulation where under the auspices of NMAA, natural therapy associations administer arrangements, in partnership with government who provide the legislative backing.

4 - Wellness and active prevention

Natural medicine has an important role in helping the community with the health problems of our era. NMAA believes an approach where natural medicine and conventional medicine work in cooperation for active prevention and holistic care.

NMAA aims to deliver benefits to consumers, practitioners and government. Our position is:

For consumers - we will:
  • Support your right to access and use natural medicine

  • Support a person-centred approach which empowers you in healthcare decision-making

  • Respect your individual needs, values and preferences in the delivery of healthcare

For government - we will:
  • Promote safe and responsible natural healthcare provision

  • Proactively monitor and address issues

  • Operate a complaints resolution scheme

  • Develop and maintain education and professional standards

  • Work collaboratively with other natural medicine associations and provide a ‘united voice’ to engage with the natural medicine sector.

NMAA conducts itself with the values of natural medicine. This means that we are:
